End of Fall Semester Reflection
Growing up I read books that had limited diversity and representation, thinking it was the norm. It had never occurred to me that the lack of diversity and representation was an issue. But now as a college student, I realize that we live in such a diverse society that it is important for all voices to be heard. In particular the voices of young people are vital because we are the ones who will change the future for ourselves and loved ones. With this realization, it made me wonder what I, a young adult, can do with little to no experience in the world of literature?
The answer to my question was this internship at 826 MSP.
I didn’t know what I wanted to do after graduation, so I did some research for internships that interested me. This is what led me to 826 MSP. Prior to this internship, I never knew that there were organizations dedicated to giving underrepresented voices, in particular young BIPOC writers, a space to write about their experiences. Reading the books published by 826 MSP and hearing students speak about their experiences has shown me that they want to be heard and seen. Beyond this, they want to be the next generation of leaders.
As I come to the end of my Communications & Development Internship with 826 MSP, I’m glad to say that this experience has helped guide me to what I want to do with my career. I want to continue working with nonprofit organizations similar to 826 MSP to empower underrepresented voices. 826 MSP is something that I never had growing up, and as I watch my nieces and cousins get older, I want them to have these experiences. I want them to know that their voices and stories are important.
