One Intern's Experience at 826 MSP
Why did you decide to apply for the Communications and Development Intern position at 826 MSP?
I decided to apply for the Communications and Development Internship at 826 MSP because I always wanted to learn about the communications aspect of media studies in a more vocational way. I wanted to find out how communications could be related to journalism and cultural studies, and how it could provide me with more knowledge of critical analysis as well as empirical investigation. Besides, I always thought about pursuing a non-profit career, so I hoped that working for 826 MSP would help me better understand how a non-profit organization operates. I also felt that doing an internship with a creative youth writing center would also give me an opportunity to improve my writing skills.
What types of projects have you worked on during your internship?
I made many newsletter posters and photo collages which really helped me improve my graphic design skills. I wrote a blog post about my volunteer experience with 826 MSP’s Storytelling & Bookmaking Field Trips program. I also audited social media accounts of other 826 organizations around America. In addition, I researched grant foundations and assisted with writing grant proposals.
What have you liked most about your internship at 826 MSP?
I really liked the fact that I was able to work closely with my supervisor, Ashley. I was assigned with enough tasks every time I went to work. Ashley is very thoughtful of my internship experience here at 826 MSP. Even though she could be busy with her work, she always made time for me when I encountered difficulties and gave me very constructive and helpful feedback.
Share a story about one of your favorite days or moments during your internship.
During one of the Storytelling & Bookmaking Field Trips, a couple of students saw me write in Chinese on my notebook. They were very surprised and intrigued. They asked me to write their names in Chinese. After that, they showed their friends and teachers the piece of paper with their names written in Chinese, and that was a really fun moment.
How has this internship helped prepare you for a future job?
First and foremost, I benefited a lot just from being in a professional environment where I’m able to contribute directly to the success of an organization. Because of this environment, I constantly pushed myself to be as professional as possible by, for example, being on time every morning. Also, I gained a better understanding of how a non-profit organization operates and how to request funds from foundations.
Would you recommend this internship to another student? Why?
I would absolutely recommend this internship to another student. Most importantly, the staff members are very considerate and helpful. They devote themselves to their mission, which is to empower underserved K-12 students to think creatively, write effectively, and succeed academically. Doing an internship for 826 MSP will also give you an opportunity to work with younger students. They will amaze you with their creativity and innocence. What’s more, you will be able to improve your graphic design skills, writing skills, and contact/relationship development skills greatly.
