#JusticeForDaunteWright
Words of wisdom from our brilliant board member Dara Beevas that we wish we didn't have to share. Today we are grieving and imagining new forms of protection for the Black community. The mothers and children of the Twin Cities deserve so much more. We know that this trauma is compounding for the young people we serve, coming at the same time as the trial of Derek Chauvin, continued anti-Asian violence, the ongoing pandemic and the return, for some, to in-person learning. It is also Ramadan, and though provisions for religious needs are included in the curfew, it's painfully evident that any interactions with police, including traffic stops, hold life-threatening implications for people of color and especially Black people.
Though we are struggling to find them amidst this pain, we know that words, like Dara's, hold power. They can be used as tools for healing, learning, accountability, memory, change, and so much more. Young writers, wherever your feelings are today, however you want or need to use your words, 826 MSP is here to support you. We should not have to be processing this, yet another, loss. Nor should the families of Daunte Wright, George Floyd, Dolal Idd (and so many others). But it’s the reality of our Twin Cities right now. And students, we are here.
