Learning Across the 826 Network

Dear 826 MSP community,

Now that February is coming to a close, we have officially been part of the 826 Network for six months! Being part of the largest network of youth writing centers in the country has already impacted our work in big ways. Check out some updates from the 826 MSP crew on recent learnings from across the 826 Network.

From our Program & Volunteer Coordinator, Ellen Fee:

Last week, I got to spend a few days with the students and staff of Ann Arbor's Liberty Street Robot Supply and Repair (a.k.a. 826michigan) through the 826 National chapter exchange program. I was able to share ideas and questions with 826michigan staff, observe programming, and deliver some handwritten letters from our students back in Minnesota. It was a great opportunity to witness the many ways writing can empower young people in neighborhoods, cities, and states different than our own.

From our Program Director, Cristeta Boarini:

Being from the Chicagoland area, I feel a deep connection to our teammates at 826CHI. Not only are they our closest 826 neighbors, but the Chicago chapter is also one of the oldest in the network, positioning them to be experienced mentors. So whether I'm designing a new program or revamping an old one, I know I can always pop down I-94 and get a fresh perspective.

This month I've needed help not with a program, but a game: Trivia for Cheaters. Even though "for cheaters" is in the title, the gameplay still has to be fair (and of course fun). On February 7, my husband and I played in 826CHI's version of the game. It was a riot, and a close game right up until the end. We learned a ton about how to keep the game competitive, make it easier for folks to cheat, and even how to incorporate student voice into a grown-ups only event. You can see for yourself how we're improving the event by coming to
