Dear Friends,

A New Chapter in Storytelling: 826 MSP's 2024 Books for Breakfast
On November 13, 2024, the American Swedish Institute was abuzz with the vibrant energy of young minds and literary enthusiasts as 826 MSP celebrated its annual Books for Breakfast event. This year's gathering was not just a celebration of literature and learning but also a remarkable success in fundraising, with over $25,000 raised to support 826 MSP's crucial mission.

Inspiring Words from Matt Eicheldinger
The highlight of the morning was the keynote speech by Matt Eicheldinger, an educator and bestselling author renowned for his captivating stories and engaging teaching style. Matt's speech delved into the transformative power of creative writing and storytelling in empowering young people. He eloquently discussed how writing aids in academic, emotional, and social development, and how it can pave the way for intellectual and career growth. His insights offered both inspiration and actionable advice for nurturing the next generation of writers and thinkers. Learn more about Matt and his work at his website.

Engaging with the Future: Our Students and Community Engagement
The morning began with an inspiring performance by Hamza Mohamed, who recited his poignant poem, "If I Were President" from the anthology,  Let This Be Our Anthem: Call to Action from Young Writers to the Next President (826 National, 2024) published by Academy of American Poets. Hamza’s words set a powerful tone for the day, reflecting the aspirations and thoughtful insights of our young community members. The poem can be viewed in its entirety here.

A heartwarming feature of the event was the interactive panel, featuring student panelists Nasriin Abdirahman (grade 9), Sidra Hussein (grade 3), and Isahaq Warsame (grade 10), who engaged directly with keynote speaker Matt Eicheldinger. This dialogue went beyond mere conversation; it was an empowering exchange that showcased the potential of young minds when they are given a platform and the right mentorship. Each student brought unique perspectives and questions, highlighting their own journeys and the impact of writing on their lives. Witnessing these young authors, such as Nasriin, Sidra, and Isahaq, share their thoughts at 2024 Books for Breakfast underscored the importance of spaces that promote creative expression. It was a vivid demonstration of how 826 MSP’s programs foster confidence and articulate self-expression among students of all ages.
